Excursions
From Aghios Nicolaos, the entire East of Crete reveals itself for exploration.
Boat excursions to the former lepers' island of Spinalonga are offered from the port several times per day.

The best preserved of all Minoan settlements dates from 1,600 to 1,400 B.C. and presents a network of lanes and stairways as well as a small palace. |

Kato Mera, the old town of Ierapetra (37 kms), is of typical Mediterranean flair and has many small shops and workshops where hand-made souvenirs of many kind are offered.
One should also not miss to have a tour of the town of Sitia on the north coast (72 kms) and it's port.
The promenade that flanks the port was re-designed some years ago, and today ranks as one of Crete's most beautiful ones. |
